The Gloucester High School softball team came so close to the Division 2 state championship Saturday evening, June 22, at Worcester State University
Coach John Nicastro’s Fishermen fell to Hudson 4-1 in the state final. It was the first time Gloucester had reached the state final in softball.
Hudson pitcher Sophie Togneri held the Fishermen at bay for the first six innings before Gloucester finally broke through with its lone run in the seventh inning. Togneri limited Gloucester to four hits and was aided by a solid defense that did not commit a single error during the game.
Hudson scored one run in the first, twice in the third and a final run in the fifth.
Gloucester finally got on the board in the seventh when center fielder Tracy Wood doubled, went to third on an infield out, then scored on designated hitter Jenna Hoofnagle’s single.
